Tracking RSS vs. Website Blog Views via Omniture SiteCatalyst
Previously, I wrote a post on How To Track RSS via SiteCatalyst, and explained how to track the click through and the onsite behavior of these feed visitors. However, I didn’t go into tracking users who choose to remain outside of your website (i.e. within the reader itself).
Well, if the reader accepts images, you are in luck because Omniture can track that via its image beacon.
What you need:
- no additional variables or plugins needed
- VISTA rule for data accuracy
The first step to implementing this is to find out which readers accept images and which do not. Many now a days accept an image that is no more than 144 pixels tall or wide.
Now take your Omniture SiteCatalyst image beacon from your site (with any additional customization you need to add in) and put that within the syndicated content. An example of an hard coded image beacon is below:
<img src=”http://metrics.domain.com/b/ss/testaccount/1/H.21–NS/1234567890.123456?&pageName=Home+Page&ch=WAC&v0=Home+Page+Names&events=event1″ height=”1″ width=”1″/>

Good advice here. Just a couple of points to clarify so that users have all the info:
1.) Omniture no longer supports sending to 192.168.112.2o7.net (or 192.168.122.2o7.net). A namespace is now a minimum requirement; you can determine your namespace by locating the s.visitorNamespace variable in your s_code.js file, by asking your Account Manager, or by using the JavaScript Debugger on a page that has been tagged with JavaScript code; look for the subdomain of the image request (if you see “mycompany.112.2o7.net,” then “mycompany” is your namespace, and you should use this same domain in the hard-coded image request). If your site uses first-party cookies, you can use your first-party data collection domain in the hard-coded request (e.g., metrics.mycompany.com).
2.) Also, keep in mind that your account may use “112″ or “122,” depending on the data center where your report suite exists. Make sure to use the same value that you see in your JavaScript image request. When in doubt, contact your Account Manager or ClientCare for confirmation.
