Additional IE Character Limitation Prevention Techniques via Omniture SiteCatalyst
In my previous posting, Omniture doFilterURLs custom plugin, I mentioned the fact that IE has a 2083 character limitation which can cause tracking issues with cumbersome SiteCatalyst implementations. Here are a few additional suggestions to prevent IE from reaching the character threshold:
- Pass in dynamic variables. Dynamic variables pass data during data processing rather than during data collection which shorten’s the image request and prevents the threshold from being reached. Ben Gaines, over at Omniture, did a great post on this titled: Trimming The Fat with Dynamic Variables that I encourage you to read and take advantage of.
- Run an audit on your current reporting suite. Are there any variables that can be deprecated? Are you fully utilizing all the data that you are capturing? Do you need to separately send the URL and pageName over in sProps? Can you leverage plugins, such as the getAndPersistValue plugin, to limit having to send duplicate data over?
- Leverage Omniture’s API to pass certain data points.
- Use classifications via SAINT to pass in additional key information that was previously passed in separate variables. Using classifications limits variables being used and also makes it easier to set up full correlations/subrelations on the variable (this is because there is only a handful of eVars that can have full subs enabled and only 1-20 item, 1-5 item and 15-2 item correlations).
- Break up the image request into separate request. This should be viewed as a last resort as sending in a primary and secondary sever call brings an additional cost and can raise your expense greatly. However, this might be the only available method for you to accurately capture all KPIs.
