Why Did I Create a Web Analytics Blog
Working in the industries that I have, (retail, telecommunications, financial, media, travel/hospitality and education) serving in an analytics capacity, has helped me gain a unique perspective on tagging/tracking strategies and implementations that I wish to share with anyone willing to read it. Hopefully my insight and experience in the web analytics space can help make someone’s job and life easier. I will try to keep the postings to the bear minimum as I, like many of you, hate reading flowery commentary prior to the meat of the posting (especially when time is of the essence).
So let me just set the expectation level off…First, I see this functioning more than just a blog. I see this potentially being the web analytics data repository and user community central for all web analytics & web marketing professionals. That will ultimately, however, depend on you the reader. The more post we can accumulate, the more users contact me with questions and/or topics to discuss, and the more we can spread the word about the site, the bigger and better we can make this. So lets work together to make this a friendly, worth wild site for the both of us
What This Blog Will Include:
- An avenue for inexperienced users to learn about the “basics” of each platform so that they can begin building the foundation for being successful in their careers leveraging web analytics. Topics include: base level coding tips to get up and running, creating basic reports/dashboards, and more…
- A resource for experienced users to tap into for suggestions, ideas and tweaks to current implemented platforms. Readers will learn about: plugins, tracking rich media (flash and silverlight), advanced report creation and data extracts, social media tracking (facebook, myspace, viral video sites, twitter and others), and many more…
- A community to share questions, comments, concerns, ideas, plugins, and solutions to any and all situations encountered in your day to day professional lives. Users are encouraged to respond with meaningful and insightful commentary.
What This Blog Will NOT Cover:
- Troubleshooting issues that arises from implementing code on the site. The code referenced on the site, posted by the admin, has been tested in a different environment than what you are currently working on. As such there is no way for me to be able to replicate your environment and the exact scenario in which you encountered the error. Please remember, with all code, to do the proper QA testing prior to pushing to production.
- Other web analytics products (i.e. smaller web analytics platforms). While Yahoo and Microsoft have made major strides in their respective analytics solution, I do not think they are “big” enough yet to start learning the in’s and out’s to blog about.
- Discussing minor release updates for the platforms. There are too many to talk about so I will reserve those conversations to major releases only.
- Topics other than web analytics… I reserve the right, based upon user feedback, to open up an arena for A/B and MVT commentary.
